In simple terms it is training designed around a person or persons competency. Competency is the knowledge, skills and attitude to complete specific tasks. This can be derived from previous training, work and/or life experience. It can, and will create relevance and consistency in your training programs and it can build strong Quality relationships, and generate teamwork within the workplace. Competency based training is focused on outcomes, which is the general difference from traditional training. Traditional training focuses on teaching someone a new skill or set of skills, with no relevance on what the bstudentsb already know, or how they best learn. Focusing on the outcome can improve overall morale within the organization, and increase productivity and efficiency. It lets the organization know that the management team places value on what skills their employeebs already have. Competency based training has been around for many years and is used in many industries, such as business, and government positions. Many a book has been written on this topic, defining what it is, how to set it up, and the many benefits of its implementation. It allows the learner to demonstrate their abilities, and to expand on those abilities in a positive environment. It allows the company to facilitate an organizational change by improving the individual’s performance, and their ability to consistently perform their required tasks. This can change the whole dynamic of an organization, how it works, and streamlining the productivity of the employee’s. Just think how powerful it would be to know what makes one person more productive than another. We live in a world of technology, and utilizing it for use in setting up your training and development may be just what is needed to move your organization forward. The concept is relatively simple and there are numerous aids on line to help you set up Competency based training. You will learn how to assess, and do an analysis of your organizational needs. You will set up a business plan to determine the concepts and methods to create a competency training model. You will learn your employee’s skills, tasks, and knowledge, and use this information to begin to fill in the gaps, based on your desired outcome. Utilize your top performers, use questionnaires or surveys, and use the gathered information to identify your company’s goals and establish competencies and job standards. This concept is so powerful many organizations begin at the management level to achieve excellence in leadership, which will then make their management team exceptional trainers of the rest of the organization.
